My name is Kyra MacKenzie, and I’m an Admissions Counselor at Illinois! In addition to helping prospective students with their college search and application process, I specialize in working with prospective international students.
My hometown is called Orangeville, IL. It is a small town located in the northwestern area of Illinois, population 800! (That’s right, I said 800!) Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to attend the University of Illinois. So, after graduating from high school in Orangeville, I did just that! I ended up graduating from Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Business.
Even though I came from a small town, Illinois was a great fit for me. I was given such wonderful opportunities and experiences, and the people I met here have become some of my greatest friends and influences. I even love Illinois so much that I decided to work here! Now that I’m an Admissions Counselor, I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking with prospective students and advising them along their college search journey.
Another fun fact about me is that I lived as an international student in China the summer after my sophomore year of college! I loved living in China, learning the language (kind of…), and immersing myself in the culture.
This is me in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
Because of my international experience, I do understand some of the questions and concerns that can come along with living and studying in an entirely new country. I feel grateful for that, because now I can relate to the potential international students that I work with. It is my privilege to help you, so please feel free to ask me any questions that you might have!
Best wishes, and go Illini!
