Janel's Bio

Hello, my name is Janel! I am a senior, majoring in Gender and Womens Studies and a second year resident advisor in FAR. I transferred here from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The two campuses have very different student bodies and a different feel to them overall. Coming from a smaller campus where many students commute, to a large, residential campus, I encountered a lot of different issues than students who originated here. I also think I appreciate the campus differently. As a member of TEAM (Transfer Experience Advising Mentors), I plan to specifically address transfer student issues in my blog. Hopefully my words will be helpful to you all!

I am from Chicago, so I was at first a little apprehensive about relocating from my big city to this small town setting, but I have yet to run out of things to do, and I do not think I will anytime soon! The University and the surrounding area is rich with opportunities for students.

Since I have come to Illinois, I have gotten involved with the Central Residential Funding Board and the Peer Recruitment Program, which is a group that visits Chicago high schools to recruit students for college. I have auditioned for College Week on Wheel of Fortune (did not make it though, maybe I will get to meet Pat Sajak next time), and completed 2.0 hours of solo flight at our Institute of Aviation. I have also seen my favorite rapper, Lupe Fiasco, in concert in the same hall as my least favorite lecture. Those are just a few of the things I have gotten into here on campus. Before I graduate, I hope to try parachuting with the Falling Illini. I hope you enjoy reading about all this and more, and that it proves useful to you on your journey at Illinois!
