James's Bio

Hi, I’m James!

I’m an Advertising major here at Illinois. I’m also pursuing a minor in Anthropology. I had no idea what I wanted to major in until my sophomore year. I decided on advertising because I felt it was a great way to be able to stay flexible. My major might be advertising, but I can advertise for anything from companies to nonprofits and more! After graduation, I’m hoping to work at an agency for some years, then eventually move to filmmaking or nonprofit work.

I chose Illinois at first because of comfort. It was close and far enough from home, I knew a lot of people here, and if I didn’t like it, I could always transfer out. But I didn’t, because I found a lot of reasons to stay:

  1. I always heard about “diversity,” but I never appreciated it until I got involved. You can truly find your place anywhere on campus if you’re willing to put yourself out there.
  2. The Illinois network is huge and widely respected. There are opportunities and friends everywhere once you make just a few!
  3. Combining the prior two reasons, it just came down to people. The connections you make, the things you learn, the person you become- I couldn’t have done it without the people I’ve made friends with and grown to love.

I’m heavily involved with the American Advertising Federation, which takes up the bulk of my involvement. I’m also involved with Covenant Fellowship Church. In my free time, I like to exercise, write, or play a game of League and Skype with friends from my hometown, Naperville. A nap is always nice too- I’m an introvert, and staying involved takes a lot out of me!

Everybody’s different, so while I can’t promise my experiences will click with you, I hope they will help you make clearer decisions and be more confident about the future! Feel free to ask me about anything, and I’ll try my best to answer.
