Transfers planning where to live at Illinois
For transfer students planning to move to Urbana-Champaign for school in the fall, where to live is a particularly tricky question.
I won’t try to tell anyone where to live, but I do want to point you to a few resources.
University Housing offers traditional residence halls, a transfer block within the traditional residence halls (if you want to be on a floor with other transfer students and have a resident advisor, or RA, who is a transfer student, this is an excellent option), and additional options such as family housing.
A few University Housing options are Graduate Housing (which is open to undergraduates at least 20 years old), Students with Families housing, and Ashton Woods apartments (undergraduates with 30 or more credit hours are eligible to live in these units).
Private Certified Housing is also available. These residence halls are owned and operated by private entities, but meet University standards for providing student services to fully support student residents.
I know many transfer students decide to live in apartments off campus. The Community Housing Information Office web page is a resource you can turn to for information about off-campus options; you will find links there to other very valuable resources such as the Tenant Union. I urge anyone considering signing a lease to first study the Tenant Union’s tips.
