I hope you are all having a nice week. If not, don’t fret because tomorrow is Friday already! In one of my last posts I asked you guys to leave me comments with questions and there was one that I’ve decided to turn into a post, so here it is: getting around campus!
The University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana is a large school. Don’t believe me?
- The University of Illinois is comprised of 320 main campus buildings.
- The main campus is about 1,783 acres (2.8 square miles)
- Check out the school’s website yourself for more fun facts
So now that I’ve established that the University is quite large, I’d like to ease your mind about getting around – it’s actually quite easy! For starters, campus is planned in a manner which makes it extremely accessible from all sides. As you can see from this map, the main Quad, with it’s 320 buildings, is pretty centrally located. Furthermore, you can tell from this map that campustown is laid out in a grid system correlating with the cardinal directions.
Bromley Hall, the Private Certified Housing dorm where I live, is indicated by the yellow star on the map. It’s on 3rd Street. Green Street, from my latest post is indicated by the green line. From Bromley, it takes me about 7 minutes to get to the Quad along the red route. In addition it takes me about five minutes to get to Starbucks on Green Street from Bromley along the blue route indicated.
As you can tell, while campus may seem huge, it really doesn’t take that long to get around. My longest walk to class is about twenty minutes and that is to the Architecture Annex which is near ACES Library, indicated by the purple route on the map above. Thanks to the grid layout of campus, it will not take you too long to figure out how to navigate campus on your own.
I hope this post has been helpful in easing your mind about getting around on foot, but of course there is also the MTD bus system which is completely FREE to students! I will be writing a post soon about other modes of transport, so stay tuned.
Have a wonderful Thursday and Friday!
