Senior Specials – Jon in Molecular and Cellular Biology

To round off the last of this Senior Specials series, I decided to ask my friend Jon if he’d be willing to share another version of the pre-medical/pre-health experience for University of Illinois students. Jon was actually one of my CHEM 105 lab partners, and his story of finding his own path in coursework and extracurricular involvement has always been a source of inspiration to me! Here’s Jon!

What was your major/s and career goals when you first came to the University of Illinois?

I was initially a Psychology major and was unsure of what I wanted to do.

What is your current major and current goal for your career?

I am currently an MCB major/chemistry minor and a prospective medical student

What extracurricular activities are you involved in at U of I?

Currently I am a volunteer in the Emergency Department at Carle Hospital. In the past I have been a volunteer in the Cardiovascular Care Unit, a Scholarship Chair for my social fraternity and an Executive Board member of Medlife.

How did you get involved with those RSOs?

Well I was thinking about being premed, so I looked for opportunities to get involved in healthcare related clubs and activities.

Have you held any internships or job-shadowing positions so far?

Yes, I have worked at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as an undergraduate research fellow and I am in UIUC’s MCB summer research program. I have also job-shadowed physicians with specialties in oncology, plastics, orthopedics and emergency medicine.

Have you held any jobs on or off campus during your time in college?

I worked at a restaurant on campus for a while.

If you could go back in time to the summer before your freshman year, what advice would you give yourself?

I would advise myself to begin volunteering at Hospitals earlier. It becomes more difficult to keep up with volunteering when you have more responsibilities, harder classes, etc.

Do you have any regrets about the past three years at U of I?

Nope

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time at college?

What’s free time?

Where is your favorite place to study on campus?

Materials Science Engineering Building

Best class you’ve taken so far?

Orgo 2 (CHEM332)

Best Gen-Ed you’ve taken so far?

Psych 201

Why do you love the University of Illinois?

UIUC is like a mini America, The Land of Opportunity.

Freshman dorm?

FAR (Health Professions Living Learning Community)

Proudest moment during your collegiate career?

Living through junior year.
