Admitted Transfers

Congratulations to admitted students! We look forward to having you join us in the fall.

Now that the transfer application is closed, it is the time for me to transition from writing about applying and address questions admitted students might have. Many transfer applicants have received decisions already, and most who have not yet will in the next couple weeks.

We mail admitted students a letter with all the information you need to accept your offer of admission and begin preparing for matriculation. Those wishing to get a start before the letter comes (it’s usually mailed about one business day after the decision is entered and visible to you online) can see information I posted in my blog last year. The post is about a year old, but the information is still good and I have checked and updated all links.

Where to live? I cannot give you advice on this, but I can direct you to resources. I suggest you look at a post I put up about living options. We are happy that University Housing has a guest blog on the Undergraduate Admissions web pages; take advantage of it if you have questions.

Members of our student group TEAM Leaders (part of the Transfer Experience and Advising Mentors project) are available for you to contact before or after transfer, and they work hard in all sorts of ways welcoming transfer students as you can see in their English and Spanish Facebook groups–feel free to join either group now.

New Student Programs is the unit that runs orientation at which you will register. You can see a bit here about them, but you might also want to consult their guest blog on the Admissions web page. (We certainly appreciate their presence here, and hope you will take full advantage–if you have questions, see if they have answered them already and use the comments if you don’t find what you need or if you have additional questions.)

The other place I will direct you to is the Office of Student Financial Aid. You can see another old post I put up about this topic. Pretty much all I am qualified to say on the subject is that all students should complete the FAFSA. If you haven’t yet, do so right away. (One other suggestion is to apply for the scholarship I wrote about recently.)

Note about the use of the blog: I welcome comments and questions. Please note that you need only give your first name. Follow the rule that if you need to provide your full name or any other information beyond your first name in order to ask your question, you should be contacting the office for personal assistance rather than for the general assistance that is a good use of this forum.

Dan,
My application status is still “complete ready for review”. What is the latest date in April that I will find out if I’m admitted? Your blogs have been very helpful. Thanks.

Hi Dan,

I am curious, has any applicants from College of Business found out yet? I’ve been waiting oh so long :(

Thanks,

Chris,

The College of Business transfer review committee will be meeting very soon. Since the application was not extended for this college, there will be no problem in its meeting the April 15 decision date. You can expect a decision by April 15; it very well may be available earlier.

Kay,

You are welcome.

If your application status is complete, you are fine. We will do our very best to have all decisions posted by mid-April. Since the deadline was extended for many programs, it may not be possible to meet that target across the board but we will do our best to have decisions posted soon.

Hi Dan,
Got accepted couple weeks ago! And I received the packet few days ago, there are a few documents with an unofficial transfer report. How do i know which classes are transferable? Because some of the classes i take are given the UIUC course code (like PHET 105, CHEM 102)on the report, but some are just like “LAS 1– 009″ or “TLAS 1–012″ which doesn’t look like a typical uiuc course code, so are they still transferable?

Thanks again Dan!

Dan,

I am sorry to bother you.

I checked my status online, it seems UIUC hasn’t received my High School transcript and Financial Certification Form yet. I am sorry that the High School transcript is sent out late, it was sent out last week, because I was not careful enough and didn’t realize that I need it. But for the Financial Certification Form, I have sent it out about 1 month ago. Do I need to resend Financial Certification Form and Bank Statement? I am very worried about that. Thanks a lot!

sincerely,
Baishun

Hello Dan,

I am taking courses at another college this summer. I am doing it in two summer semesters; one early and one late. In the book that was mailed to me it says final transcripts need to be in by the 14th of August, but on the web site it says the 17th. I am not sure if they will be processed by the 14th. Which date is correct?

Hi Dan,
I was admitted into College of Engineering (Electrical) and I will most likely accept the offer. I visited the campus, and loved it.
My question is, if I am to take some courses during summer at another institution, what steps do I need to take in order to transfer those credits?

Thank you

Vic,

Congratulations! I hope you will be joining us in the fall.

Often coursework is transferable as college credit, but does not equate exactly to a course on our campus. In that case, we assign the DEPT 1 - - designation. If there is a T at the beginning, that means it is a course that was not in our database and for admission review we assigned a temporary evaluation.

If you have any questions about such coursework or if you believe it should be counted as a specific Illinois course, you are welcome to provide the complete course syllabus for review (or re-review). You most certainly should bring the syllabus from each course that has the T designation.

Baishun,

I cannot give you a definite answer because this is a forum for general information. Speaking generally, it does take some time for documents to be fully processed and then to be reflected on your status screen. This is particularly true for international documents because the processing is very labor-intensive. The queue is rather long, I am afraid.

Because financial documents are necessary for visa processing after admission but not for academic review, they are generally held to be processed last.

Hillary and Marc,

Your applications are in the review process. They are complete, so you do not need to worry about supplying other documentation.

Percentages are not possible to give. It would vary quite a bit by major. Most majors will admit all qualified students. You can consult the Transfer Handbook to compare your qualifications against the requirements. For majors that are competitive, such as those in the College of Business, it will depend on the size and relative strength of the applicant pool.

Dan

Dan
03.31.09

Chris,

You would be able to discuss that with your advisor at orientation. In our office, we admit students only to the primary major to which you have applied. Discussions of minors and double majors are between the admitted student and the programs involved.

Dan

Jared,

It is not that important that you worry about the detail on that level. Basically, just get us your final transcript as soon as you can (that is, as soon as it’s available). It will be critical that we receive it before classes start.

Kristie,

We would like all decisions by May 1 for all admitted students who received their offers of admission by mid-April.

For those that are posted later (we will do our best to limit this number, but some applications are coming in and being completed later than the original March 1 deadline), we would like a response by two weeks after you are notified of admission.

Dan,

I have gotten all required information in and it says that all information is received, but my application is still listed as “Incomplete Items Outstanding”. Is there likely something I am missing, or does it just take time to change? I also received an email from the school reminding me to get any missing info in. In this a generic email as a reminder, or specific to me personally?

I applied to the Department of English as a transfer. Do you have any idea when I should have a decision by?

Thanks much,

Hi Dan,

I applied to the College of Media well before the deadline of March 1. I submited an application to Media Studies by mistake, and contacted admissions on March 20 to change my program to News-Editorial Journalism. My question is: will this last minute change affect the date I receive my admission notification (will I receive it at a later date than everyone else?) Also, do you have any idea when the College of Media applicants will receive admission notification?

Thanks,
Sandy

TK,

If you were adding classes before the review, I would ask you to submit the details to us to have your file updated. If you were dropping classes, you would need to let us know. But since you have already been admitted and you are only adding, you can just send us the final transcript when your courses are completed and we will update your records.

Dan,

I sent in my application for a fall 2009 sophomore transfer only a few days after the University began accepting transfer applications. I have yet to recieve a decision, but I was wondering if in the instance that I was admitted if I could change my major. I checked the list of Open/Closed Programs, and the Major that I would be switching to is open for transfer.

Would I simply have to wait another year to apply again for the University, Or would you suggest just sticking out my chosen major for a year and switching then?

Thank You

Rachel

I’m still waitng for the college of business committee.
Since the big day is coming soon, I’m worried what if I’m denied.
I know this question sounds like stupid.
If admitted students reject their offer, generally, does U of I pick out more students to make up for vacant seats? Wish me luck! Thank you always.

Hi Dan,

I’m excited about the admission I was offered from college of engineering, and would love to attend next fall.

However, when I check my financial award online, there is none. It says, “You do not currently have a financial letter”. However, I submitted my FAFSA and the university received it. Does this mean I won’t receive any aid? Or are they still working on my award letter?
I always thought the award letter and acceptance letter comes together.

Thank you

Hi, Dan.

Some of my friends are admitted to UIUC for Electrical engineering and some of are not. They already got their decisions on mid March. We applied on similar date. I suppose, commitee of Engineering (Electrical) already made their decision.

And this might considered as a silly question, it is true, I am on some kind of “waiting list”? meaning that commitees made their decision as “denied” ,but don’t they(commitees) notify decision right after the decision has made? or do they hold the decision for some reason?

Just can’t wait.

Thank you

The change you made would have taken a day or two to process. After that, your file will be complete and ready for review along with any others awaiting decisions.

I cannot tell you when the Media committee meets or when decisions will be entered. I am sorry, but I just don’t know for each program what the timeline is. We are doing our best to get decisions posted, although having extended the application period means some will be later than mid-April.

Andrew,

I am sorry about the news!

Please check out my other blogs; I have talked about this particular denial decision fairly extensively. Basically, it means you did not have enough graded hours for us to evaluate your application based on college performance, so we used the very high freshman admission standards and your high school performance in making our decision.

Please try again after you have earned more college credit so your evaluation will be based on your college work rather than on your high school credentials.

Rachel,

It may still be possible to make a change. It depends on the program you would switch to. You can call Admissions for personal assistance.

Alternatively, you could wait and apply for spring 2010 admission (to some programs–many are open fall only) or fall 2010 admission.

Dan

No. Yield for transfers is extremely high. For the few programs that have transfer caps and, thus, have competitive admission, the number of offers is made based on the knowledge that some admitted students will decide not to accept the offer.

Li,

Changes from one college to another are generally possible, but whether or not such a request would be approved depends on too many factors for me to be able to predict for you the outcome in your son’s case.

If he would like to be considered for the other major, he is welcome to contact our office and make the request. (See “Contact Us” link below.) It would mean giving up the offer of admission and going into review once again, but it would be best for him to be in the major he wants to study.

Michele,

In order to study on our campus, each and every student must furnish proof of immunization. That is the form you received. If you cannot provide the proof, it may mean that once you arrive on campus you will need to go to McKinley (our excellent health center) and receive the required shots. We want to ensure a safe campus for all.

All students are required to have health insurance. University of Illinois offers a wonderful and very economical package. Once you are a student, you will be covered. There will, of course, be fees involved.

You might want to see the “Health” section of our online admitted students checklist and the links there for more information.

Dan,

My app to the College of Media was submitted by March 1, and I’ve been checking online everyday since. Today I noticed a change in that I had originally applied as a “transfer junior” but that status has been changed to “transfer sophomore.” I’m not wondering why it changed (I’m assuming it’s related to # of transfer units) but does the change affect my odds of getting accepted? Can I transfer as a sophomore?

I am not an IU transfer candidate, but recently informed my transfer schools that I have withdrawn from a spring semester class. I am a freshman with 16 credits from the fall, and with 8 AP credits will still finish the year with 36 credits. My question: Should I write the schools a letter explaining that I dropped the class because after browsing through X school’s course catalog, I could not find a course with similar content and believed that it wouldn’t transfer over. How do you think this will change my chances at my transfer schools? Of note, I am playing on my school’s Varsity Baseball Team (D3) this semester. Thank you for the feedback even though I am not an IU candidate!

I have applied to the University of Illinois as an electrical engineering major. I have submitted everything, save my previous college’s transcripts, which i am currently unable to produce due to an academic hold in lieu of tuition (I have a strange tuition payment plan). Is there anything I should/should have submitted instead of those documents?

I was told that they would be able to wait until I am able to produce said grades, and that I would be admitted regardless due to the total furnishing of everything else, however, I find myself up late at night pondering and worrying about such a delicate situation where my admission depends on something I am currently unable to procure.

I’m sorry, you are not considering applying to Illinois? (Or is it Indiana University you are not considering?) If you are not going to apply here, my best advice is to contact the school(s) to which you may apply.

In general, explaining anything that you think may look odd to a transfer review committee is a good idea. For this university, we have an optional essay question that would be good for that purpose.

Gen,

Congratulations! I am sorry to hear about the financial issues. Declining your offer of admission now will not put you at the least disadvantage later. Provided you continue to make good grades should you continue to study, and also, if you continue elsewhere, you realize that you will need to complete at least 60 hours here should you eventually matriculate, you do not need to worry.

Dan

Yiming Li,

Congratulations on your admission!

The letter you received means you WERE offered admission. However, this offer was based, in part, on the work you are currently doing (and perhaps summer work you indicated on your application). If you do not complete the work you indicated when you applied or if your grades fall dramatically, we have the right to rescind the offer. Basically, you do not need to worry as long as you simply keep doing what you have been doing.

If you do drop or if you may fail any class(es), you must let us know immediately. If you are going to complete what you said you would on your application, you simply need to send us final transcripts after your grades are posted.

Hey Dan I was just admitted a couple of days ago YEA!! Now i’m planning for housing. I visited the websites but I really wanted to go and check out the dorms myself. When I called for transfer visits, someone told me that it wont be possible until April 24th? When the online site says I could go anytime Mond.-Fri., with some exceptional dates. So I’m confused. All I want to do is meet with an Admission counselor and see some dorms. So.. what should I do?

Hey Dan,
I wanted to apply for change in my permanent mailing address. Can you help me with it?
I also wanted to ask, how many students are accepted by UIUC every FALL as international transfer students in College of Engineering? And how many seats are left?
Thank You

Sincerely
Kevin

Congratulations on your admission!

You have heard incorrect information. Quarter credits are not automatically ineligible for transfer. You will receive an evaluation of your coursework in your admission package.

Josh,

Congratulations on your admission!

All transferable coursework contributes to your GPA. You will actually have three GPAs. The most important is your cumulative average which includes all the work at Illinois and all transferable credit. You will also have a transfer GPA with just your external credits, and your Illinois GPA just including your work at Illinois.

Lauri,

Congratulations!

I think a visit is a great idea. I am sorry about the difficulty. It is possible to come to the office as a walk-in and talk to a counselor. However, arranging visits does mean some planning in advance. With well over 10,000 students having been offered admission (freshman and transfer), and with thousands of high school juniors and first-year community college students considering applying in just a few months, the number of interested visitors is very high.

If you would like to try the Campus Visitor Center again and see if there is some way they can help you sooner, you can try, but I do not know what the prospects are. If you let them know you want to join one of the daily campus tours, which include a look at our residence halls, that would be the only part you would need to make a reservation for.

Dan,

I just found out that the Physics Class I am taking at UIC is equivalent to PHYS211 at U of I. This would mean I would be on a more advanced 4 class track (of my MCB major) as opposed to the 2 class track of PHYS101 and 102 that i was planning on doing. My question is: can i use my PHYS211 credit toward PHYS101, and then continue on that track and take 102 next semester? Or am I forced to now continue down the advanced track?

Thanks,
Ted

Hello Dan,

I am planning to transfer to U of I as a sophomore.
U of I just gives 6 credit hours for Chemistry Ap credit, which means excluding Chemistry lab. If such is the case , Do I have to take Chemistry ( 4 credits including lab)again at my current university because my university does not provide a seperate lab course?

Hi, Dan:

I have several questions about the admission decision.

1. Some of applicants have already gotten the admission decisions while some of applicants have not, especially applicants in same major. Why there is a time difference?

2. You have said at the beginnning of this message that “many of you have already gotten the decisions, and most of you will be receiving a decision soon.” For the term “many of you”, what is the percentage of this amount of applicants get early decision?

3. Does interantional students go through some special processes?

4. You mentioned that some of the major was still open for several days after deadline, and this might be the reason for admission process slow down. You also said we will be hearing decisions by mid April. So, are those majors that opened longer likely going to dalay the bottom line of admission decision issue day, which is mid April? Is electrical engineering major one of them?

5. If applicant received a denial with reasons such as “due to the student number limit” or “due to the student quote of engineering department” , but statistically and theoretically meet all requirements, even way above what are listed, can that applicant appeal on this case? Can that applicant get admitted eventually?

6. Is there seriously a quota of enrolled transfer students? Should each department list the available space before applicants apply for transfer?

Thank you very much Dan. Look forward hearing from you.

I am sorry, but that is an academic advising question rather than an admission question. I am not qualified to answer it, but if you contact the department they may be able to help you. You will certainly be able to discuss this at your orientation meeting when you register for classes.

Kevin,

I’m sorry, but no, I cannot help you with an address change in this forum. That is the kind of issue that needs specific attention from an Admissions counselor. You can request help by contacting our office using the link at the bottom of this page.

I can’t give specific numbers of international students admitted to any given program.

All I can do is make the following general comments about Engineering. As I have noted in other blogs and as we have published on our web pages, Engineering is tight in two majors, Mechanical and Aerospace, and may not be able to admit all qualified students to those programs. However, they will do their very best to admit students to the college, and typically will have space for all qualified transfer applicants.

Haiquan,

1. It is highly individual. I cannot list the number of factors across our 150 majors.

2. That figure is not available. Decisions are constantly being posted as colleges work through their different review processes.

3. Review is the same for international students. Processing does very often take quite a bit longer because working with international documents is much more labor-intensive.

4. Decisions are being posted. Yes, Engineering was open later than the originally posted deadline. Yes, that means it may take longer for some students to receive decisions.

5. No such denials are issued.

6. No.

Dan,

I saw that you told Greg he had to wait until orientation to register for classes. Does that go for all transfer students, because I live in Champaign and so I do not need to get any more familiar with campus, so is it required?

I have signed up for the date of the 26th for the orientation day just incase, but need to speak with an academic advisor as how to proceed. Can I do that now, or have I done as much as I can until the 26th?

I also am coming in on the veterans grant and the GI Bill, so am I able to speak with a financial counselor before I register? I need to make sure everything is in properly in place and all paperwork required is completed.

Also, I sent in my exiting papers form the military, so how do I find out if/when I get 4 hours of military credit?

Thanks-Jared

All new students register at orientation. That is when you will meet with an advisor. You can contact New Student Programs for more information.

You can contact Financial Aid before orientation.

If you have submitted the necessary paperwork for transfer of credit, you should see that reflected on your degree audit at orientation.

Hi, Dan:

I am very worried about my application process at this point of time. I have been reading other bloggers’ topics regarding admission and seems like most of the applicants have already gotten a decision or something up to mid-April, but I am still in pending for manual review. For now, my concern is straightforward: “when will I get a decision?” The last day of accepting offer is May 1st. The later the decision arrives, the shorter the time to make changes regarding my personal affairs.

Even though the admission decision is delayed after mid-April, the last day of accepting offer is not delayed, is it?

I Look forward to hearing from you
Thanks a lot!

My application status says “Pending - Manual Review Req.” I suppose that’s because I’m missing some of the required coursework, and I did not write the third essay to explaining this situation.

I know you are getting bombarded with these questions, but I am starting to get a little nervous about the status of my application. I have some questions.

I found that the ESL placement test was required for me.
Is there anything instead of this?
Such as proving that I don’t need to do it through something;

In addition, I found that there were about four placement tests.
Math, chemistry, foreign language, ?
I already took classes over than calculus level.
I took Chemistry 1,2 in the previous university and I won’t take any classes related to chemistry in UIUC.
Do I need to take Math and Chemistry tests?

Thanks~

Hey Dan!!
Hurray! I got admitted!
Now that I have been admitted, there are several questions in mind which I would like to resolve. I have received the UIN and have accepted the offer. I am a International Student and have got admission in FALL’09 Computer Engineering. Some questions unsolved so far are as follows:-

1. When do i have to pay the tuition fees and when will I know the exact amount?
2. What are different part time jobs available? Is there any way to make a head start for them?
3.When shall I know how many credits are transferred?
4. Do I have to take any examinations before the beginning of the session?
5. And lastly, when does the session begin and how soon before that am I advised to come to University?

I know those are a lot of questions and lot many may be very idiotic too but I shall be highly grateful if you could help me with them.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Kyungsue, Erin, Steph, Vanessa, Jennifer:

Applications that are complete do not need further attention. Pending manual review or college review or other versions of the different possibilities for a complete file do not mean anything is wrong with your application. Those decisions only mean that your application has moved into the stage that review committee uses for completed files. This is all covered in detail in other blogs if you would like to look at my other entries and responses for more details.

No Psyc application that was complete and ready for review for two months should still be pending. If you wish to learn more about your application, it would be a good idea to contact our office directly.

I’m sorry, but there’s just nothing more I can tell you. Because our application was open longer, we are working toward the end of April as a target rather than the middle of April. Some programs like Art that require additional review processes may take longer.

I am sorry about Business. It was a very competitive pool. Congratulations on the offer from Economics!

Annie,

Congratulations on your admission!

You do not need to apply for the acceptance of your transfer credit. We will award credit based on your official transcripts. You will receive or you should have received an evaluation report with your admission letter. You are welcome to discuss any questions about the articulation of any given course with the college offering that course. It is essential that you provide the complete syllabus of record in those cases.

We ask that students accept the offer of admission if they are ready to commit to coming to Illinois. Anyone who needs to change that decision should notify our office as soon as possible.

Congratulations on your admission!

Tuition will be due in September.

Unfortunately, the University has not yet set the final tuition and fees figures for next year because we are still waiting for state budget outcomes.

A report on your courses is included in the admission packet.

The University academic calendar is on the University web page.

New Student Programs will provide information about examinations you will need.

Your questions certainly are not idiotic.

Let us know if you have additional questions any time. I will say that it’s sometimes easier and faster if you just search the University web page. There is a convenient search tool on the home page.

But… we have a large number of files and we are doing our best to work through them to give each of you the answer you are waiting for.

If your file is complete and under review, please keep waiting a bit longer. If you believe there may be a problem with your application and you want someone to check on it, you need to contact the office directly–I won’t be able to help you based on a post here.

Again, thank you for your patience. We did hold the application open a few weeks longer in order to give more opportunities to more students. This did cause delays, though, so although we have posted many hundreds of decisions already, some applicants are needing to wait until late April. We are doing the best we can to make sure all decisions are made and all applicants are informed before this month ends.

Dan,

I have been admitted and am was wondering how I should go about credit transfer. I checked out the u.select website and found that most of my classes were compatible. However, I couldn’t find a few classes that I am taking at my current school listed on the site to even check if they were compatible. Also, some classes came up on the Illinois side as Las-1 which I was confused about as well. Lastly, is there anything I can do about courses that are listed as non-transferrable, such as printing out a course description and going over the class with my advisor at orientation to see if there really is an applicable course? Thank You!

Dan

Zach,

Your credits will be transfered automatically upon submission of your final transcript.

If you do not see a course you have taken in the database accessible through u.select, it has likely not been evaluated. You will want to bring your course syllabus to campus when you come for orientation. (A course description is not sufficient–the syllabus of record is required.)

Any course that has been evaluated and the faculty have determined to be transferable but not directly equivalent to a course we offer is designated with the format DEPT 1 - -. LAS 1 - - indicates that the course is transferable as 100-level LAS credit.

If you see in u.select that the course has been deemed nontransferable, that means it has been evaluated and is not considered to be similar in level, scope and content to what we teach at Illinois.
You can request re-review, but since faculty have already determined the course will not transfer, it is likely that will remain the case. Certain categories of work are always nontransferable. This includes pre-college coursework, applied or vocational coursework, and any special-topics seminar course.

Hi, Dan:

I currently looked through the U.select credit transfer system and I found out that some English courses from my university listed on U.Select have already changed names or no longer exist. For instance, freshman composition ENGl(RHET)104 & 105 have changed names into freshman composition ENGL 150 & 250, which is equivalent to RHET 105 PRIN OF COMPOSITION offered by UIUC. However, in the current database freshman composition ENGL 150 & 250 are not equivalent to RHET 105.

If this is the case that I cannot transfer my ENGL credits, should I let my university write an explanation about this?

If this is the case that the application review committee think that I have insufficient transferrable credits and denied me, should I appeal on this?

Thank you very much Dan!

Haiquans,

Articulation agreements are date ranged. You can see the dates in u.select for when any particular equivalency is valid. Whenever you took any given class is what matters in figuring out how or if it will transfer.

Annie,

You can send additional information if you want, but I cannot say whether it will be used in evaluation if you are still under review because the last applications are being reviewed in the next few days.

If you have already been admitted, you should send updated transcripts as soon as grades are in.

Hi Dan:
I have been admited to the College of Liberal Art and Science, and i will major in Math. Now I have a question, is it possible for me to change major in UIUC? I have 46 transfered credit and I have not exactly dicided what I really want to major in. Is it hard to change major inside the college or art and science? What will be the requirement for changing major? Thank you

Dan
04.23.09
5:19 pm

Siqi,

Students can change majors. Some changes are easier to make than others. Changing from Math to Actuarial Science would not be very difficult. Changing from Math to Sociology would be fairly easy to arrange provided your performance is good, but might make timely graduation challenging because the degree requirements overlap less. Changing from Math to Architecture would be extremely difficult, would lengthen time to degree considerably, and would likely not be approved because of space limitations in the program. Changing to Business would not be possible (only rising sophomores can apply to change into Business). So… some changes would be simple to arrange, others less so.

Students wishing to change majors need to seek permission from the college or department offering the program into which they would like to move. Undergraduate Admissions is not involved.

In general, the later in a students’ studies a change is made, the higher the likelihood time to degree will be extended.

Hi Dan,

I have a question about my admission type.
Currently it says my type is “Transfer Junior,” although I was hoping to transfer as a sophomore. I guess that’s because I’ve earned too many credits at current university.
There are almost 30 credits that are not relevant anymore because I earned those from business school before I changed my major from business to physics. So actual credits that are relevant are much less than what it’s shown on my transcript.
I was wondering if I could transfer as a sophomore and also take some of the courses that related to my major again at Illinois.
I’ve taken some of the advances physics course since my academic adviser recommended me to take, and at the time I didn’t consider transferring until a couple of professors suggested me to. That’s why I don’t quite meet the required course work. Although I got good grades, I want to take some of the advance physics courses again at Illinois but I’m not sure if the school allows it after the credits are transferred.

Thank you.

Hello Dan,
I’ve been admitted into the College of Engineering for a major in Computer Engineering. However, I haven’t received the admission letter by mail yet. My mailing address is in India and I checked my application status only today, so I have no idea of when the decision came out. When can I expect it to arrive and what is the latest date by which I will have to accept the admission offer?
Also, is it possible to defer my admission by a semester in case of difficulties? If I can, what is the procedure?
Thanks in advance.

Kyungsue,

Each student’s standing is determined based on the number of hours. It is not possible for students to select their own standing. If you have between 60 and 89 hours, your standing is junior. All transferable credits count; you cannot pick and choose the courses you wish for us to consider. I have explained this in more detail in other blog posts if you wish to explore those and maybe get a bit more information.

Saiganu,

Congratulations on your admission!

Your question about when your letter will come is too specific for me to answer here. All I can tell you is that generally letters are mailed the next business day after the decision is entered.

Students have until May 1 to accept or decline an offer of admission if the decision was posted before April 15. For those posted after that date, we would like to hear your decision within two weeks.

Admitted students can only deffer an offer in special circumstances. The general rule is that the offer of admission is for the term for which you applied only.

Issac,

If you have received a denial decision, you are denied. If you have not heard, you may still be offered admission. The vast majority of decisions have been made, but there are the few loose ends that need attention still, for whatever reason. Incomplete files are receiving denials. No one will have to wonder if this is the case–any applicant who is offered admission or who is denied, for whatever reason, receives an official letter indicating the decision. No one, every, is simply denied by default because a decisions is never made.

Caity,

Grades for transfer work also come over, along with the hours and the credit for the class. The Illinois transcript includes three GPAs:

1. The Illinois GPA includes all graded coursework taken at Illinois.

2. The transfer GPA includes all graded transferable coursework taken elsewhere.

3. The most important, is the cumulative GPA that includes all coursework in 1 and 2.

Note that the exception is for international work. Because grading systems are so varied, the credit comes in without the grades for courses taken outside the U.S.

Issac,

Please consult your letter of admission. You will see that the admission offer is contingent upon successful completion of the work in progress. All admission decisions are based on the assumption that work that the applicant stated s/he is engaged in (and/or has planned for the summer) will be completed and that grades will not drop precipitously.

We seldom rescind offers of admission, but it does happen (for both transfer and freshman applicants). Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. You can contact Admissions for more information or to discuss your particular situation. This is advisable since you can sort the situation out earlier than if you wait until we receive the final transcripts.

Try not to fail any classes! That obvious advice aside, do call us and let us help you sort this out.

Dan

Momo,

Most students start fall, so that is what all the general information is geared toward. However, New Student Programs knows what students are admitted for summer and will work with you accordingly. You can check with them if you have any questions about registration.

It would be fine if you want to change your matriculation to fall. If you will do that, you need to let us know ASAP. Please send an email from the email account associated with your application to Admissions requesting the change. It is generally not a problem to make that change, but New Student Programs and your college need to know when you will be arriving on campus, so it needs to be done right away.

Jacob,

It’s great that you are interested in Illinois and that you are planning from the beginning. Early planning is very smart.

I can’t answer your question because it depends the college or university where you’ll be taking classes. You should use the u.select system to look up transferability of courses. It’s a great tool for looking up equivalencies and for creating program-specific plans. Those studying at Illinois community colleges can enter their courses into their account and create unofficial degree audits to do the best planning.

The deadline was May 1. For any admitted student who did not receive the offer of admission until after April 15, the deadline was two weeks after receipt of the admission letter.

If you have not yet notified us of your decision, you should do so now. It is time to sign up for summer orientation, arrange for housing, and so forth. We also need to know the composition of our incoming class to arrange the appropriate number of course sections.

Samuel,

Congratulations on your acceptance. I am sorry to hear that you will be unable to attend Illinois. I do hope you will be able to come here in the future.

I am afraid you are going to have to complete a new application should you wish to attend Illinois in the future. Your offer of admission was only good for the term for which you applied. In rare instances, we do grant deferrals for students who are unable to matriculate, but the reasons for such deferrals include only unexpected circumstances outside the student’s control (for example, if a student is hurt in an accident and needs to be in rehabilitation or if a military member’s discharge is delayed). Financial issues are certainly unfortunate (and it could be argued out of your control), but they are not sufficient cause for a deferral.

If you were admissible this term, if you continue to perform well, if your credit hours are not going to be advancing too far (remember, you will need to complete at least 60 hours at Illinois no matter how many transfer hours you bring in), and if your program is open (I do not expect any Engineering majors that were open this fall to be closed in a future fall or spring transfer application period), you should be in good shape for receiving another offer of admission. You will, though, need to apply once again.
