During the weekends last year, I found myself a bit bored with nothing to do, and I needed to find something to lift up my dwindling spirits. That was when I found out about student discounts on collegiate sports tickets, apparel, and busing. That inspired me to utilize my weekends to take advantages of these benefits when possible.
You can ride the bus for free in the sense the university has an arrangement the local transit district, so all you have to do is show your i-Card when you get on the bus instead of paying bus fare. I first used the privilege of free busing for students to get to and from the restaurants on Green Street where I could meet peers, relax, and talk about classes. My apartment is 1.8 miles from campus, and this utility allowed me to save car trips in the winter and nighttime bike rides in the fall and spring. These were things which I tried to avoid to do for recreational purposes such as meeting people, but now after I found out about the busing discount, I can find a economical way to travel in free time.
I also found myself taking advantage of the student discount on some school apparel when I was informed of the matter. Although I used this the least because it required spending money, I did find myself more inclined to look at any reduced price items, such as University of Illinois car plates, when I was bored or wandering campus. The apparel discount is not so much a draw to buy items, but a challenge to see if you can find a cheap item which might be cool to have.
The last student benefit I used over the following year was the sport ticket discount. When I heard about the Cubs’ World Series Commissioner Trophy being present at the February 4 basketball game, I had to go. Knowing I received a ticket discount, I was delighted to be able to be able to witness such a cool piece of history without breaking the bank, and it did certainly help. Instead of paying $92 for two tickets, I paid $30 for two identical tickets with the discount. Thus, the benefits a students receives at the University of Illinois not only allows one to easily enjoy major events like this, but it also helps bring accessible recreation to the patrons who belong to the school.
