Corn! Corn! CORN!

Before I moved here from Chicago for school, there was a heavily circulated myth that there was nothing to do at U of I. There was supposedly nothing here but corn, and a poor ol’ city chick like me was doomed to either become a raging alcoholic or simply be bored out of her mind.

Au contraire my friends, this is not at all true.

I’ll spare you the RA spiel in which I name all of the wonderful things to do on campus if you’ll allow me to humor the “nothing but corn” argument for a moment. The corn is awesome, okay!? If there was nothing but corn here, we’d still be having a blast because these people know how to have fun with some corn (and pumpkins too, actually)! I thought the annual Sweet Corn Festival was cool (War was there this year!) but the corn festival’s got nothing on the corn maze at Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch in Rantoul, IL about 15 miles away.

Honestly, I think the corn maze is a little scary, and maybe that’s why I like it. We just go out into this corn field that’s been cut into an amazing maze, take our giant flashlights with us and get lost. This year, we saw a possum and everybody stopped like it was Freddy Krueger. Also this year (just like last year) we wandered in so deep and got so lost that the place closed while we were still out there, alone in the dark.  Coming out at that time is, as my friend put it, a time to start walking back to back if you know your horror films and you want to live. :) Good times for all.

Join the Transfer Mentors Saturday, November 7 from 4-7pm if you’d like to visit the corn maze too! For $10, you get to go into the maze, go on a hayride and have a campfire with s’mores.

Hey Janel! I love reading your blogs! I am a Reporter for the Daily Illini and I am doing a story on the Collegiate Readership Program. I remember you talked about it last spring. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions, like how you feel about it. If you are interested, then e-mail me and I’ll give you my number. My deadline is Saturday, so the sooner the better. Thanks! Hannah brenna11@illinois.edu
