Academics at The University of Illinois

Amber from California posed a great question that I would like to answer. She asked about the academics at the University of Illinois. This is an interesting question, and I am going to try my best to answer it. The University of Illinois does not have a reputation of being particularly easy, and it shouldn’t. If an education at the University of Illinois were easy, everyone would go to college here. In fact I am sure everyone would get in. But this is not the case. We have world-class professors who are passionate about their classes and what they teach. This also means that the majority of the classes here are difficult. Don’t get me wrong, there are classes on this campus that are easier than others (students can tell you about this when you get here) but this is the same for any college you attend. Here is another interesting point: you may find some classes here on campus easy while your friends may not, and vice versa. The great thing about the University of Illinois is that there are so many people you can study with. People form study groups all the time. I am in several at any given time. And if you form a study group here but do not like it, you can easily create another one.

I get together with my classmates and study all the time. I will study after this blog post. Studying has to become habitual. It should be something you do every day. The great news is that there are so many people on this campus that have similar thoughts, so you will not feel out of place.

Amber, in regards to the residence halls it depends on where you stay. Every residence hall has its own feel to it. I can say that I think living in the dorms is a phenomenal experience and you will meet some really cool people, people that can ultimately become some of your best friends. Is there a dorm that you are specifically speaking of?

If you have any questions regarding anything mentioned in the blog or anything regarding college please let me know. My goal is to provide as much information about Illinois and my experiences here as possible.

Hi, Ashton!
In my country, it is said that it is easy to get into the school. But I really think that UIUC is a very good school because of its excellent engineering and economics education. But as UIUC is so big a school, some of my classmates told me that professors will not pay much attention to students, especially undergraduate students. Is that true? Although I think it doesn’t matter so much because we should not depend on others.

Hi,Ashton
I’ve just got my Oct. 10 SAT score and it’s just 1950. Will UIUC accept me as an international student? I really want to major in engineering & amp;economics.
Wait for your response.

Dear Ashton,
My question is, when I apply, If I choose finance in the Business School as my major but am not admitted, then my chances of being admitted into another related major are similar to my chances if I choose “undeclared major” in the first place? I mean I want to get into your university first regardless of which major it is; i can take some related courses and take some explorations before I finally get a finance degree. What do you recommend, should i choose finance as my major or should i leave it “undeclared” in the application form?

thank you very much for your attention and answers.

Echo

Hi Ashton,

I am applyig to the University of Illinois, and plan to major in Business and Finance. I was wondering what preliminary classes are required for freshman year (such as english math etc) or are there no requirements.

Thank you,
Paige

Hi Ashton! Thanks for answering my questions in this blog! It is appreciated!!!! That’s awesome that people do form study groups there. (yes I could see how the accademics could be challenging there) they have one of the number one media programs; and a bunch of other fantastic programs as well! I myself am looking to going into the BSW (batchlers of social work) program, and then getting my masters in socialwork after I finish the batchlers. Uh I didn’t have any dorm that I was really spasificly talking about- just what is the difference between all the dorms? Like for example- I am in the hugest residence hall on campus here- is there one really big dorm that students live in? (I also know that some of the dorms are split by gender) as well Another question I have (and I sceem to notice it a lot where I am at here) is do a lot of students struggle with the class miterial and assignments? Like for example if an assignment was given out; do you find that a lot of students struggle? What is usually the class avrage for exams? Like some/most of our exams here are like 60-70 as the whole class avrage. (and it’s even expected that on the first exam a student doesn’t do well) because of the high accademics- and also because you don’t really know how the professor is going to test. Do you find the same thing there? Is it expected that a student will not do well on the first exam? (my professor actually told me that by the way) which kind of shocked me. But thanks for answering my questions!! I appreciate it!
Amber.
