Spring is here! Spring registration that is!

It is registration time! Oh yes, the beginning of November marks spring registration for the University of Illinois. There is a very systematic way to how students register online. We all know that if it opened at one time for everyone to go on and register, the system would crash because too many people would be trying at once and it would get very frustrating!
So this is how it works. Everyone is given a time stamp for when they can begin to register. Upperclassman and James Scholar (Honors) students are given the earliest dates and times to register. After that, underclassmen are allowed to register. You can find out your assigned time and date online. An email is sent out advising you to check your registration time and how to sign into the system and get going.
However, there are some things you should do before your registration date. The class schedule is always up a bit before registration begins. To help make registering easy, it is best to look up the classes you want to take. I actually write out a schedule to see what class fits where in my schedule and get everything organized. This makes it so much easier because when you go to register you just have to plug in the classes you want to take. If you do not plan ahead, the process will take quite some time and could get difficult!
Another tip is to have back up classes. Some of the classes you may want to take can fill before you register. Therefore I always choose a few backup classes that I could take just in case there are no spots left in the class I want. It’s frustrating to not get the class you want, but I have to say it didn’t happen that much to me. Realistically this is always a possibility, so do not get yourself too stuck on one class or schedule.
Lastly and importantly, keep checking back throughout the registration times and even the first week of the semester for openings in a class you really wanted to take. Many times students decide to change classes or drop classes so, by continuing to check you might just get lucky enough to find an open spot in the class you want! I encourage you to be persistent because you just never know.
Stay Classy Chambana!
