What better thing do we all have in common than liking to eat?
During my short four years at Illinois, I have gained some wisdom on fun things – like the best places to eat on campus!
Once I got started writing, I realized how many good places to eat there are! There is so much that I need to tell you that I think I am going to have to break this post into two parts just like I did for my academic advice ones. Yet I have a feeling this one might be even more useful. 😉 Enjoy, and Bon Appetit!
Asian: Basil Thai
So my mom and I have gone to some great Thai places in Chicago. We loved all of them, but I have to say, the Thai food I have had at Basil Thai is even better! Plus, they give you HUGE portions, so another plus is that you will have some left to eat the next day. For some reason, the next day Thai tastes even better.
American: Black Dog Smoke and Ale House
Who knew the best barbecue I’ve ever had would be in Urbana, Illinois?
Rated number one for barbecue in the area, this is the place to go if you are in the mood for no frills and a fun and filling meal. Black Dog is most famous for their barbecue pork sandwiches. Almost better than the sandwiches they offer is the sweet potato fries, which come with the meal!
This restaurant is also a sports bar, so it has tons of TVs if you would want to watch an Illini game. This place is definitely something fun to keep in mind when your friends or family come to visit! Since I was introduced to this restaurant only this semester, I’ve already made a note to myself to take my family there sometime during graduation weekend!
Fast food: Chik-Fil-A
So when I first came to Illinois way back in the days of 2006, we actually had a McDonald’s in the food court in the basement of the Illini Union. Then one day it was gone, only to be replaced by this mysterious restaurant called Chik-Fil-A. Chik-Fil-A does one thing, and they do it right – chicken sandwiches. The restaurant originated in the south, so that also gives you a hint that they know what they are doing!
My friends and I made it a tradition to treat ourselves to Chik-Fil-A before our biology tests and finals. It was something quick and good, and perfect for crunch time. Another bonus – you also don’t feel like you are going to have a heart attack after you eat it!
I will definitely have to hit up Chik-Fil-A again before I leave for medical school in Chicago.
Here is the thing – I am Italian (if you couldn’t tell by my name), so thick crust pizza is not my thing. My mom and my sister are all for it, but my dad and I prefer to be able to eat pizza with our hands and not a knife and fork! Plus, you can have TWO big slices of thin crust and not be stuffed.
Anyway, now that I have convinced you of the superiority of thin crust pizza over thick, I need to also tell you that Antonio’s has the best pizza on campus.
Here is the thing about Antonio’s – it has super humongous slices. Its crust is perfect, which is one of the keys to good pizza – not too crunchy and not too wobbly, just somewhere in the middle.
Another great thing about Antonio’s is that they have about 100 different varieties of pizza available. Obviously they cannot serve up all those in the same day, so the kind of pizza made for the day varies. My friends have been known to get pizza with tortellini on it, Mexican style pizza, even fancy schmancy goat cheese and basil pizza!
Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I like the barbecue bacon chicken ranch pizza. I know it is a heart attack on a slice – there is no denying it, it is in the name — but honestly, it is like heaven when you eat it, and I thought I would hate it. All I can say is, if you try nothing else that I recommend, you HAVE to try barbecue bacon chicken ranch pizza!
