excited freshman and family in front of Weston Hall on move in day

Why Weston Hall is the Best Hall

Before starting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), I was most fearful about one thing: making friends. While this fear is probably the most common among new students, living in Weston’s Living-Learning Community (LLC) helped me squash that fear very quickly.

Move-in day at Weston Hall.

Location

Located a mere ten steps away from Ikenberry Dining Hall and a short seven-minute walk to the Main Quad, Weston was the perfect home away from home. However, it’s location was not the only thing that made it so perfect, but the LLC inside it. One of many LLCs in University Housing, Weston Hall features “Weston Exploration”.

Features of Weston Exploration

Special amenities include an early move-in date with tons of activities to get to know other residents in the hall. It also has a renovated basement that is perfect to spend late nights studying where you can meet new people. One of my favorite features of Weston is the underground classrooms. These large rooms are home to some discussion classes for larger lectures offered on campus. I had my SOC 100 discussion section in Weston at 10 a.m. on Wednesday mornings and did not have to leave my bedroom until 9:57 a.m. – very convenient.

There are also other resources, such as advising from the Division of General Studies and office hours with staff from the Career and McKinley Health Centers. Plus, Weston has “Get on the Bus” field trips that take you around campus and into the Champaign-Urbana community. These trips allow you to learn about different careers and ways to shape your post-college life.

Known as being the “social dorm”, Weston Hall is one of the best places on campus to make friends. Your usage of any or all of these key features in Weston Hall is totally optional, but moving-in early, having class and studying in the basement, as well as meeting with advisors from the Career Center and McKinley Health Center really made my freshman year on campus memorable. All of these extremely unique resources helped me find tons of amazing friends that I will have long after my time at UIUC.
