One of the most useful resources is the major-specific registered student organizations or the RSO’s. There is a wide variety of RSO's on campus, from environmental conservation to political groups, pottery clubs, and professional organizations. It's always good to explore your interests in college. However, it is also highly recommended that you join an RSO specific to your major.

How RSOs can help you grow in your major

Quad Day can be so much fun! It is a great event that introduces you to the hundreds of RSOs on campus–especially when it is your first year on campus and you’re trying to explore the many different opportunities available at UIUC! It can be scary, though, when you are unsure about your major. But no need to worry! UIUC has a great team of advisors for each major to help you figure it all out. Also, the introductory classes for your major can really help you understand it better. However, sometimes this is not enough.

The Beauty of RSOs

One of the most useful resources is the major-specific registered student organizations, or the RSOs. There are a wide variety of RSOs on campus, from environmental conservation to political groups, pottery clubs, and professional organizations. It’s always good to explore your interests in college; however, it is also highly recommended that you join an RSO specific to your major.

These major-specific RSOs allow you to connect with upperclassman who have taken classes that you may take in the future. They can help you out when it comes to applying to internships and jobs and can also offer advice when it comes to your major and the careers you may want to potentially explore. Additionally, these RSOs will host events with internship and networking opportunities, as well as educational experiences.

My Personal Experiences

When I first chose my major, I was really unsure about what opportunities were available to me. I was honestly really unsure if Political Science was the right major for me, but after joining the Association of Minorities in Political Science, so many opportunities opened up for me and helped me understand my major better.

The best part is there are so many RSOs on-campus from the Association of Minorities in History to the Society of Women in Business. All of these RSOs strive to ensure that you can grow, and understand your major.

Hi Everyone! I am from the NW Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. I am a freshman studying political science and i am on the pre-law track. I love being involved on campus through a variety of RSO’s and other pre-law-oriented groups. UIUC offers so many opportunities that you can venture and grow in and you will truly find your second home here!
