UIUC Test-Optional Policy Extended

The University of Illinois System recently announced that we will continue our test-optional policy for the next two years. This means that if you’re a high school student applying for admission for Fall 2022 or Fall 2023, UIUC won’t require you to submit SAT or ACT results.

The decision to extend our test-optional policy was made in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We fully understand that it has limited the opportunities you normally have to take the exams. And you’ve had enough to contend with over the past year without adding this concern into the mix!

I know that some of you worry that we’ll judge your application differently depending on whether you choose to report your scores or not. However, our office performs a holistic review, so students who applied test-optional this past year were not disadvantaged in our review in any way, and many were admitted to our most competitive majors.

Some of you also seek advice on whether you should report your scores or not. We encourage you to report your scores if you feel they accurately represent your ability, but again, it’s entirely up to you. If you’re struggling to decide whether you want your test scores to be considered, I encourage you to call us at 217-333-0302. Our admissions counselors can give you helpful guidance based on your situation.

When you apply, you’ll be asked whether you want to report your scores. If you choose to do so, you’ll self-report them directly in your application. Know that even if you have your official scores sent directly to us from the testing agency, you can still choose not to report them when you apply. We also only use the highest scores you give us.

I should note that our test-optional policy doesn’t include the TOEFL or IELTS. If you’re an international applicant, you still need to demonstrate a command of the English language. This means that we may still require or strongly recommend these tests.

For more information related to our test-optional policy, I encourage you to review our FAQ. You can also email us or call us at 217-333-0302 with any questions you have.
