UIUC to Expand English Language Proficiency Options for 2022 Cycle to Include Duolingo English Test

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic limiting testing opportunities for students, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will extend testing options for students wishing to demonstrate English language proficiency for undergraduate admissions purposes. In addition to the TOEFL iBT and IELTS tests, we will now accept the Duolingo English Test for students applying for spring 2022 and fall 2022 admission.

After a careful review of validity studies, evidence from peer universities, and options available for students to safely complete their tests, we felt it was important to expand options for those who want to demonstrate English language proficiency using alternative tests.

On the application for admission, you will self-report your highest scores and highest sub-scores, regardless of test date. To fulfill our English proficiency requirement, test scores must be taken within two years of your date of enrollment in the university.

We will continue to accept TOEFL iBT and IELTS scores for students to demonstrate English language proficiency. We will require official scores only if you enroll at UIUC. Our TOEFL iBT code is 1836. IELTS scores should be sent electronically via your testing center to the account name “University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Undergraduate.” Duolingo English Test scores should be sent electronically to the account name “University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign Undergraduate Admissions.”

  • Hi Binay,

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will accept the Duolingo English Test, the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition, and the IETLS Indicator for fall 2022, although a decision has not been made for future terms. You can learn more information on our website. We are not certain as to all of the U.S. universities accepting Duolingo; it’s probably best to review the websites of the universities you’re most interested in.

We hope this helps! If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to email us or call us at +1 217-333-0302.
