It may seem cheesy, but the wise words of Dr. Seuss are a reminder that, despite what is going on around us, there is nothing more important than staying true to who we are.
College is the prime time to discover who you are and who you were created to be, but it can be quite a challenge at times. The desire to fit in, especially in the first few months, is really strong, but being able to combat that desire is the most important lesson to learn in college.
Ponder the quote – “why fit in when you were born to stand out?” We don’t need more of the same people, we need more of you. The University of Illinois is one of the greatest campuses in the world because of the multitude of opportunities and ways to get involved. We live on a diverse and inclusive campus. So, instead of trying to find ways to fit in, make your hobbies your extracurriculars, and the friends will follow at a shockingly fast rate. You wouldn’t have gotten into the University of Illinois if you didn’t deserve to be here.
Stand out and be yourself. Have confidence in who you are. We need you for you. This campus is the perfect place for you.
